Utes begin practices with 9 underclassmen

first_imgThe Utah women’s basketball team may be ranked in the top 25 in a couple of preseason polls, but coach Elaine Elliott calls her team “so young” and “so new.”Elliott’s Utes began practice Saturday morning at the Huntsman Center with six freshmen and three sophomores on the 13-player roster.”We only have three kids with any appreciable playing experience,” said Elliott. “We lost three starters and another senior who played a lot.”So why are the Utes expected to repeat as Mountain West Conference champions? They have two of the MWC’s best players in juniors Kim Smith and Shona Thorburn. Both were first team all-league players last year and Smith is the two-time Mountain West Conference MVP.”We know they can play anywhere and against anyone,” Elliott said. Two 6-3 freshmen to keep an eye on are Deanne Hanchett from Alta High and Jess Perry from Canada. The Utes have one of their best schedules ever with the likes of Stanford, Georgetown, Washington, TCU and Oklahoma coming to the Huntsman Center. They open the season with an exhibition game Nov. 2 against Baden Sports.last_img
