first_imgRugby League BY FRANKIY KAPIN Reigning Digicel Cup champions Lae Snax Tigers are determined to make it three in a row heading into the start of season 2018 Digicel Cup challenge this weekend. Speaking at the season launch for the Tigers in Lae on Tuesday, franchise owner Adrian Chow said the Tigers, now into their eighth season in the semi-professional rugby league competition have done it with back-to-back premiership wins in 2016 and 2017 and are aiming to make it three in a row in 2018. “Our objective is to win three in a row,” Chow told Tigers players and their family members at a dinner hosted in Lae. Chow acknowledged the commitment of the players throughout the past seasons as they continue to juggle their lives with their roles and tasks apart from rugby league. “We all know as players we are juggling family, school and work and to be part of the team’s training in order to make the team,” he said. Chow has acknowledged two players who have been members of the Tigers participating in the Digicel Cup for the past eight years. He commended Tigers longtime fullback Robert Vuia and second rower Sydney Fred for being part of the team over these years. Vuia said that this season could be his last. Tigers coach Stanley Tepend said as much as the support they get come game-day, each player’s family is the biggest and important support the club has and encourages continuity in season 2018. Tepend said for this season they have lost Charlie Simon and John Andy to the Hunters. He also said that this year they increased the player-base from 23 to 29 current members inclusive of the academy players and one more support staff. He added that the academy players don’t get every benefit of the seasoned players but Lae Biscuit has gone a long way in paying for their school fees. Representing the players, Tigers forward Rex Yallon said it was an honor for the players to have Lae Biscuit Company as the major sponsor. The Tigers face the Gulf Isou in the opening round of the Digicel Cup season 2018 in Port Moresby this weekend.last_img
